Czars 505, an underground (literally under the ground) rock club in St. Joseph, has a classic rock vibe that is expressed through the graffitied block walls, the dark moody interior and the huge murals of Robert Johnson, Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan. Thxc country elements.
The band brought out a big crowd early, an uncommon feat at many rock clubs. Lorelei Gorman, the lead singer, sang with intensity and soul, and exuded warmth for the audience (largely fans, it seemed) – she blew kisses, chatted and asked if the Cubs had won their game. The Troublemakers’ set up is: lead guitar, bass and drums (Lorelei plays rhythm guitar). Most songs played were originals, although the band rocked out on a mean version of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ “Shakin All Over,” which inspired jubilant dancing … before 11 p.m.! Another major achievement.
Judging on name only, readers may be tempted to confuse Brett Mitchell and the Giant GHOST for Brett Michaels, front man of Poison. The former Brett led his Saginaw-based band in funky upbeat covers of bands from the Beatles to Sublime, and a few clever and catchy originals. The band’s drummer could not make the gig due to an emergency so the multi-skilled lead singer was drumming and singing – showcasing all of his talents.
