Betty Jean Pompey, 77, of Cassopolis, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, in Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Betty was born Nov. 19, 1935 in Calvin Township, Mich. to Joseph and Myrtle (Snelling) Pompey, Sr. She was raised by her foster parents, John and Lucille Cooper in Chicago, Ill.
Betty graduated from Dusable High School in Chicago. She married Henry Walls, Sr., in Chicago. She later married Van LeRoy Musgrove in Chicago. They both preceded her in death in October 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her foster parents; one daughter, Denise Musgrove; one son, Anthony Walls, Sr.; one granddaughter, Erika Mwewa; one sister, Patricia Sykes; two brothers, Earl Pompey, Jr. and Conroy Vance and one brother in law, Clifford Burgin.
Betty was raised in Greater Harvest Baptist Church in Chicago, where she gave her life to Christ under Pastor Louis L. Body, now deceased. Betty loved her family. She also loved her coffee and cake. She enjoyed watching the late Bishop Patterson, Pastor John Hagee and Bishop T.D. Jakes on television.
Betty will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Perry) Broady of Covert, Mich., Elaine Musgrove-Mwewa of Mishawaka, Ind.; two sons, Wesley Musgrove of Elkhart, Ind., Kenneth Musgrove of St. Louis, Missouri; ten grandchildren, Anthony Walls, Jr. of South Bend, Ind., Betty Walls of Bay City, Mich., LeVonica James of Pompano Beach, Fla., Sydney Woods III of Lexington, Ken., Brittany (Zeek) Thomas of Kalamazoo, Mich., Leon Brown, Jr. of Grand Rapids, Mich., Breana Broady and Isaiah Broady, both of Covert, Mich., Noah Musgrove of St. Louis, Missouri, Evan Buck of Montgomery, Ala.; nine great grandchildren, Alana Walls, Antonio Walls, Stefan Walls, Jaylen Ware, Jaden Musgrove, Arynn Walls, Zakary Bailey, Aaliyah Woods, Zekaiya Thomas; two sisters, Marjorie Pompey of Cassopolis, Wilda Burgin of St. Paul, Minn., two brothers, Harry (Colleen) Reed of South Bend, Ind., Harry Pompey of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters in law, Sue Pompey of Marcellus, Mich., Leslie Vance of Detroit, Mich.; chosen daughters, Janell Brown of Cassopolis, Mich., Irene Buck of Montgomery, Ala., Phyllis Wilson of Covert, Mich., Cynthia Harris of Elkhart, Ind., Emma Presley of South Bend, Ind.; chosen sons, Bradley Lee of Cassopolis, Mich., Aaron Gatson of Cassopolis, Mich., Jeff McCarroll of Chicago, Ill., Quinton Johnson of Kona, Hawaii, David Gordon of Vandalia, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Family and friends will gather Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, from 2 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. in Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 North Broadway Street, Cassopolis, Michigan, with Pastor Kevin Parker, River of Life Family Church, South Bend, Ind., officiating.
Ms. Pompey will be laid to rest in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Cassopolis, Mich.
