Cassopolis Village Council decided on Monday to discuss how to treat Stone Lake for invasive plants that are damaging it.

This came after Cass Can co-creator Carol Wilson led a discussion on the issue. According to Wilson, weeds such as milfoil and elodea are damaging the lake’s ecosystem and making it harder for people to fish. Wilson called on the council to take a lead role in creating a treatment action plan.

Village Manager Cindy LaGrow called the lake a “jewel” and an important asset in drawing visitors to the area. Trustee Cynthia Ash, however, noted that the village does not own the whole lake and that the council will have to act in cooperation with LaGrange Township, which owns part of the lake, and the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Wilson also suggested Stone Lake join the Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program, which provides access to equipment and resources to track and monitor the lake.

Diamond Lake is already a part of the program.

The council also invited the public to get involved in the planning of the annual Christmas in Cassopolis event which it will begin organizing soon. Specifically, members are looking for a stage for children to sing on, sound equipment, an MC and other ideas on how to engage the community.

The council has yet to approve site plans for the Cassopolis Family Clinic, though the groundbreaking will occur on Aug. 20 as planned.

The clinic cannot lay the foundation until plans are approved, but is able to begin digging.

Also at the meeting, the council approved Bender Electric to bring electric to the Pioneer Log Cabin and approved Kenneth Baker as the new treasurer beginning Tuesday.

Cass County Drain Commissioner Bruce Campbell gave an update on improving drainage systems on Spencer Road. Campbell said the work should be finished before winter.
