A manufacturing company with facilities in New Troy and Buchanan plans to add around 50 new jobs over the next three years.

Vickers Engineering is this week applying for a $9 million tax abatement related to CNC Machining equipment and robotics that will be purchased for multiple automotive and oil and gas projects.

Vickers Engineering operates two facilities in Michiana — a 120,000-square-foot facility in New Troy and a 50,000-square-foot facility in Buchanan. Matt Tyler, Vickers CEO, said his company employs about 160 people at the New Troy facility and another 15 in Buchanan.

Tyler said the majority of the expansion is tied to the New Troy facility.

“We have a long-term vision to continue our growth pattern in Michiana,” Tyler said.

Automotive is the company’s main industry served (primarily as a tier 1 supplier to Toyota), although the company is growing quickly in other non-Midwest-based industries, such as oil and gas.

“Our use of technology and automation — primarily robotics — has been the primary driver of growth. Most of the new opportunities awarded to Vickers have been programs typically made overseas or in other regions of the country. Robotics and our skilled work force has given us a tremendous competitive advantage,” Tyler said.

Vickers started in 1970 and had 35 employees in 2000. It currently employs 175.

Tyler said the Weesaw Township Board is expected to vote on the tax abatement Wednesday.
