CASSOPOLIS — An Edwardsburg man who fired gunshots at a vehicle after a drug deal gone bad is headed to prison.

David Hahaj II, 21, was sentenced Friday in Cass County Circuit Court to 38 months to five years in prison with credit for 234 days already served. He also received a consecutive two-year prison sentence on a felony firearm conviction.

Hahaj pleaded guilty earlier this month to charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, carrying a concealed weapon, delivery of marijuana and felony firearm possession.

Judge Michael Dodge said the offense occurred in December 2010 at the Dollar General in Edwardsburg where Hahaj was attempting to sell marijuana to a man named Brandon Douglas. When the drug deal went bad, Douglas got in his car and began to motor off. Then Hahaj pulled a .35 caliber pistol and fired shots at the vehicle, which had other passengers in it.

Assistant Prosecutor Tiffiny Vohwinkle called the offense a “brazen act with no regard for people in the vicinity.”

“It was a congested urban area in broad daylight where people shop for groceries,” Vohwinkle said.

Defense attorney Lawrence Quigley said his client wants to get treatment and already has family support.

“He’s still a young man with goals and ambitions,” Quigley said.

Dodge said he received a letter from Hahaj’s mother requesting no prison time. But the judge explained because there was a plea agreement, his only options were to accept the deal or deny it and send the case to trial.
