Timbers gets new administrator

Karen Schalte has taken the position of administrator of The Timbers of Cass County, replacing previous interim administrator Steve Case.
Schalte, a Michigan native, moved from Payson, Ariz., where she worked as an administrator for a nursing home, to take the position.
During a recent trip to Michigan for her daughter’s wedding, Schalte said she was asked if she would like to apply for the opening and she agreed. With more than 30 years in the industry, Schalte began her career in occupational therapy. She also, at one time, served as administrator for Orchard Grove Care Center in Benton Harbor.
“I’m well-practiced and interested in the work I do,” Schalte said. “My favorite part so far is getting to know the residents and staff.”
With a recent string of changes that have taken place at The Timbers, 55432 Colby St., Dowagiac, Schalte said she hopes to bring residents, staff and families together.
“I want to bring about a well-knit community of staff and residents,” Schalte said. “Change is hard for many people, and I hope to bring about some stability.”
Schalte said that, because care for senior citizens is often systemized according to state mandates, she is looking forward to making sure The Timbers’ systems are operating smoothly.
“I’m ready to make sure the systems are going in the right direction,” Schalte said. “With The Timbers being just two years old, many staff haven’t had the opportunity to know and practice all the systems.”
The mother of six said that, while she has only been on the job for a little more than a week, she is prepared to handle any challenges that come along.
“Just change in and of itself is difficult for people,” Schalte said. “It can be a challenge, but I want to help guide people through that change.”
An open house to meet the new administrator is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 18. For more information, call (269) 782-7828.
