It wasn’t always pretty, but Cassopolis was able to square its season record at 2-2 with a 52-32 drubbing of visiting Bronson Friday.

Though the final score would imply that the game was a dominant performance by the Rangers, first year head coach Dan Purlee would begged to differ, citing his team’s defensive struggles against a deceptive Viking offense.

“I would have liked to have done better defensively. We had a good game plan against these guys, but for some reason we just didn’t execute,” he said.

The Bronson offense ran a loose variation of the famed “Wing-T” that requires the use of several different backs and uses multiple ball fakes to cause confusion among the opposing defense. The results were there for the Vikings as they rolled up 400 total yards on offense, 298 on the ground and 102 through the air, en route to scoring four touchdowns.

Luckily for the Rangers, the Vikings got in their own way more often than the Cassopolis defense did. Bronson turned the ball over six times throughout the game, throwing two interceptions and fumbling the ball four times, one of which was returned 34 yards for a touchdown by Ranger linebacker Jaylin Lawson. Of Cassopolis’ 52 points, 28 of them came off of Bronson turnovers.

If the Viking offense gave Cass a headache, the Ranger’s offense gave Bronson a concussion.

Led  by their big bruising back (Lawson), lighting quick quarterback Vashaun Morgan and ultimate utility man Tyler Presely, the Cass offense moved the ball seemingly at will on the Vikings.

Lawson led all rushers with 205 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Morgan added 113 more yards on the ground with a large bulk of them coming on a dazzling 56-yard scamper to the end zone. He also threw for two more scores and 74 yards with Presely catching both touchdown passes.

When the smoke had settled and all was said and done, Cass had amassed 402 yards rushing, 74 more passing, for 476 yards total and seven touchdowns.

“You can’t complain when you put up 52 points. Lawson was a workhorse, our quarterback made some plays and it was all there for us,” Purlee said. “We did a nice job.”

The Rangers defense will be preparing to come out of the skillet and into the fire as Cass travels to Buchanan next Friday to face the high octane Bucks and their all star running Doug Freeman at 7 p.m.
