Cassopolis Village Manager Meg Cluckey submitted her formal resignation Friday, which was recognized by the Cassopolis Village Council Monday during its regular meeting.

Cluckey’s resignation explained she would continue work in her position for 60 days, until Oct. 5. While the item was not originally on the agenda for discussion, Pro-tem Dianna McGrew made a motion that because Cluckey submitted her resignation, her position in the office should end effective Aug. 13. The motion promoted discussion among the council members about whether relieving Cluckey of her duties effective immediately was necessary. The motion failed, with Trustee Geraldine Sims, Cynthia Ash and Brittney Beauchamp voting no.

“We need to get a little more information from her and have her fill us in on what she’s still working on,” Sims said.

McGrew said having Cluckey’s resignation effective immediately would allow her to “move on with her life.”

“I appreciate Meg giving us 60 days notice on her resignation, and I move that we pay her until Oct. 5,” McGrew said. “But being that she resigned, she should be done in the office, too.”

Trustee Eugene Wagner supported the motion, prompting Ash to ask why. She also asked Cluckey directly if she wanted to leave immediately, or if she had reservations about work.

“No comment,” Cluckey said.

“If she gave us 60 days and wants to work 60 days, we should do it that way,” Pecina said.

Sims explained that due to memos, Cluckey felt she was working in a hostile environment since October. Ash questioned the council on who would take over the position if Cluckey were to be dismissed effective immediately.

“Who’s going to step up and fill her shoes until then?” Ash asked.

When approached after the meeting, Cluckey said she had no comment.
