NILES - When driving around Niles you may notice a white trailer along the side of the road showing you a digital reading of how fast you're traveling down the street.
This new piece of equipment is a speed trailer that has been purchased by the Niles City Police Department.
Right now the department is trying the trailer out in different locations around the city. "Our initial goal with the trailer is to place it in locations where speeding complaints are received, in an effort to slow traffic down," Huff said.
The trailer is able to keep a log of all the traffic that has passed by the trailer, so that the department has vehicle count and speed records for the time period the unit is at a specific location.
Huff added, this information will allow us to monitor the need for follow up traffic enforcement by officers in these areas.
Citizen of Niles who have identified a potential speed issue in their neighborhood or other location in the city can call the Niles City Police Department and leave a message for Officer Kevin Kosten who will evaluate if the trailer is the appropriate tool for the reported problem, and if so, place it at the problem area or make other arrangements for enforcement action to be taken.
Huff reminds the residents to drive safely.
