Allan McDonald, 63 / July 2, 1947 — June 16, 2011

Allan T. McDonald, 63 of Niles, died at 8:45 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born July 2, 1947 in Grosse Point Farms, Mich. to Teddy Thomas and Annie Amy (Bartlett) McDonald. He graduated from Royal Oak Kimball High School and attended Ferris State University and Wayne State University. In his youth, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle, and enjoyed serving as a lifeguard. He was a veteran of the Vietnam era, serving in the United States Army. He has lived in Niles since 1980.

Allan was an information technology specialist and was employed at Clark Equipment and the South Bend Community School Corp. before his 25-year career at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Niles, where he served on the Vestry and the Usher Committee. He enjoyed fishing, completing crossword puzzles and tracking current events through several newspaper subscriptions.

On June 19, 1971, in Clawson, Mich., he married the former Kathleen E. Younk, with whom he was looking forward to celebrating their 40th anniversary in a few days. He is survived by his wife, Kathy McDonald, and their children, Jonathan (Kecia) McDonald of Ypsilanti, Mich. and Jill McDonald of Niles; grandson, Sullivan Rudolph of Niles; and Allan’s sisters, Marilyn (Terry) Poll of Phoenix, Ariz. and Janice (The Reverend Larry) Laskie of Arnold’s Park, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

The memorial service for Allan McDonald will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 20 at Trinity Episcopal Church with The Reverend James Slack officiating, assisted by The Reverend Larry Laskie, and will conclude with a procession out to the churchyard for the veterans flag presentation and “Taps” by an honor guard of the United States Army.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
