Dowagiac Union Schools have hired a new principal for Sister Lakes Elementary School after announcing that former principal Gretchen Hart would be stepping down.
Mike Campbell, of Green Meadow Elementary School in Comstock Public Schools, will take the reigns as Sister Lakes’ new principal with 22 years of experience in education.
Supt. Mark Daniel said during the special board meeting that Campbell holds a rapport with teachers and students that the district felt matched.
“It’s a good fit,” Daniel said. “He’s had a chance to meet with some staff members and his first day here, he had the chance to read a book to summer school students.”
Campbell has also been working closely with Hart, according to Daniel.
“They’ve exchanged information and Gretchen said she feels good with the selection,” Daniel said. “We’re looking forward to him joining our team.”
Campbell, who lives in Mattawan, said he was excited to be a part of the district and get started.
“I’ve met with a lot of people so far and they’ve all been helpful,” Campbell said.
“I’m looking forward to building working relationships with everyone.”
Daniel also announced that Suzanne Dorman has been hired as school nurse.
“Suzanne filled in and she did a great job,” Daniel said.
“We’re pleased to have a person with that expertise to serve as nurse for all of our schools.”
Other personnel recommendations included Amanda Miller for sixth- and seventh-grade science at Dowagiac Middle School, filling the vacancy from Nichole Hulett moving into an administrative position.
Shayla Williams was also hired as seventh-grade volleyball coach with Rachel Orvis hired as freshman volleyball coach.
