NILES - Soup cans were collected by Ballard Elementary School students in grades K through six as part of a PTO sponsored fund drive which ended Friday.
There were 626 cans collected by the children which were donated to the Salvation Army of Niles. The theme for the drive was "Our School Is 'Souper'."
In conjunction with the Soup Can Drive, members of the PTO and Ballard staff provided a lunch of homemade soups for the teachers to thank them for their service. The luncheon on St. Patrick's Day was titled "We're lucky to have you."
The students at the school also received a lunch featuring grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup (fitting the soup theme) and ice cream sandwiches which were provided by the PTO. Darla Schneider and Sharm Haimbaugh co-chaired this event.
