Niles’ Noble shots 68 to lead the field after first day

EAST LANSING — The Niles golf team will head into the second day of the Division 2 Lower Peninsula Golf Finals at Forest Akers East in last place, but Chris Noble will take a two-stroke lead into today’s competition.

Defending state champion DeWitt grabbed the first day lead after shooting 292. Tecumseh is currently second with a 302, while Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood was a strolke farther back in third.

Gull Lake and Big Rapids were tied for fourth place at 306. Niles finished the first day with a 323.

Noble, who shot 76 on the opening day of competition in 2010, carded a four-under par 68 to lead the field by two strokes.

Griffin Smith of Cranbrook-Kingswood, Marcus Fry of Spring Lake and Bobby Thomas are all tied for second at 70. Brett Long of Clio and Davis Dekorte of DeWitt are tied for fifth at 71.

Besides Noble’s total, Niles also got an 81 from John Schrader, an 85 from Jared Langmeyer, an 89 from Brett Phillips and a 96 from Sam Clark.

In Division 3, Dowagiac’s Chris Craft shot an opening day 81. Aaron Knutson of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Sam Weatherhead of Grand Rapids West Catholic were tied for first place with a 68.

In Division 4, Cassopolis’ Blaise Suseland shot 82.
