NILES - The Michigan State Police Niles post is warning local residents and senior citizens of a telephone scam reported in the Niles area.
A Niles resident reported telephone calls from a individual reporting to be from the Canadian government wanted him to pick up $250,000 in prize money.
The called stated he needs $2,500 cash; wired by Western Union to pay for the Brink's armored car to deliver the money. The name the money was supposed to be wired to was Robert Sprigg, in Calgary, Canada.
The Michigan State Police Intelligence Unit has heard of this variation of scam over the past year. "Any request to send money electronically or via Western Union should be greeted with skepticism," state F/Lt. Michael Brown Niles Post Commander.
