Richard D. Holdread, 83, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Nov. 27, 1928, in Elkhart to Jess and Georgia (Curtis) Holdread.
Dick worked as a buffer in the musical instrument industry.
At age 16, he began working for Martin Band, then C.G. Conn and Vincent Bach. He proudly retired from Vincent Bach in 1991.
He faithfully cared for Doris for the rest of her life after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
He had quite a hobby collecting old silver and brass and refinishing pieces until they shined brighter than a star.
He was an avid fly fisherman, tying his own flies, was king of the euchre club at Brentwood, a Cubs and Bears fan and also an animal lover.
On June 26, 1948, he married Doris Marie Schrader in Elkhart. She preceded him in death May 7, 2007.
Also preceding him are: his parents; brothers, Robert, Curtis, Douglas and Gayle; and his sister, Barbara.
Surviving are: his daughter, Diana (Dennis) Eash of Indianapolis; sons, James (Susan) Holdread of North Webster, Ind., and Thomas (Angela) Holdread of Elkhart; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation was one hour prior to the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home at Cobblestone Crossing, Elkhart. The Rev. David Hudson, chaplain at Elkhart General Hospital, officiated.
Burial is at Adamsville Cemetery, Adamsville.
Memorials may be given to the MS Foundation or Pet Refuge of Mishawaka.
