EDWARDSBURG — Edwardsburg made the most out of its scoring opportunities in a 5-0 Lakeland Conference boys soccer win Monday over Buchanan.

The Eddies, which improved to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the league, took control of the match after scoring five times on their first 10 shots on goal. Edwardsburg tied a season-high for goals in a match. In their season-opener the Eddies beat Comstock, 5-0.

“That’s something we haven’t had all season long,” said Edwardsburg coach Ryan Rosenkranz about his team’s scoring success against the Bucks. “It’s the first time since our season-opener that we’ve had a multi-goal game. That tells you how much we’ve struggled to score. It was nice to get our first conference win, get some points on the board and get a variety of guys to score.”

Evan VanBelle was the leader on offense for Edwardsburg, scoring twice. His first goal from 10 yards on an assist from Jared Kalka gave the Eddies a 1-0 lead with 25:49 left in the first half.

VanBelle also scored Edwardsburg’s final goal on an assist from Matt Toney with 32:33 left in the match. The Eddies senior now has five goals on the year.

“We’re working together as a team,” said VanBelle said. “We started out rough, but each game we’re getting better as a team.”

Edwardsburg continued its momentum gained from a 1-0 win over Niles on Saturday.

The Eddies scored three goals on seven shots in the first half. Freshmen Nick Karamalegos and Ben Chambers added goals in the first half for the hosts. Karamalegos scored from five yards with 16:14 left in the first half and Chambers scored from 10 yards off a direct kick from Eric Richardson with 2:35 left in the first half.

Edwardsburg owned a 7-5 edge on shots in the first half.

“In the first half we didn’t bring our A game,” said Buchanan coach Brian Pruett, whose team fell to 1-8-1 overall and 1-2 in the league. “I thought we were moving in the right direction, but the same team that I saw (last) Thursday (5-4 loss against Dowagiac) for us didn’t show up today. The first three goals scores were inside the goal box and it just happened because we were missing marks. There were issues that shouldn’t have happened. Edwardsburg finished and capitalized. They’re a good team. They’ve been improving as the year has been going on.”

Buchanan had the first two shots in the second half-both inside the goal box. But the shots, which came from A.J. Reed and Stephen Graber, were stopped by Edwardsburg goalie Patrick Harvey.

“In the second half I tried to mix some things up a little and I thought we had a little momentum,” Pruett said. “But we just couldn’t get back into the game.”

Edwardsburg got its fourth goal on a header from sophomore Grant Szalewski from five yards with 32:57 left in the match.

It was the first goal of the year for Szalewski, Karamalegos and Chambers.

“Anytime you have a little success it gets your confidence going,” Rosenkranz said. “We struggled at the beginning of the year against some tough teams. It’s nice to get our guys some victories.”
