NILES — The Edwardsburg tennis team finished second at the Niles Invitational doubles tournament Saturday.
The Eddies got some good performances from their No. 1, 3 and 5 doubles flights. Each of which took second only dropping matches to host Niles.
Edwardsburg’s No. 6 doubles flight was the only team to win a match against the Vikings throughout the entire tournament.
Edwardsburg tennis team members played extremely hard and it showed.
Six of the eight matches that the Eddies lost went the distance into third set 10-point tie-breakers, one of which also included a second set tie-breaker.
The Eddies’ No. 1 team of Anthony Dopp and Trent Baker had the toughest match of the day against Niles’ Jared Langmeyer and Brad Miller.
In a third set tie-break, the Eddie pair found themselves up 9-8 serving at match point when Niles erased the deficit by winning the next three straight points and the match. It was a tough loss, but they quickly recovered, beating their next opponents in straight sets.
The Eddies played brilliant at times and caught some bad breaks at other times, but they competed well throughout the entire tournament.
Edwardsburg coach Mark Zarycki was quick to praise his teams’ gutsy performance.
“It was a long and hard fought day of tennis,” Zarycki said. “The nice thing was that it was a very competitive tournament. I thought our kids played great.”
