Opening day of competition proves successful

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — It was a perfect night for Team Michigan as Sports Fest got under way at Bethel College on Monday.
The defending Sports Fest champions won all three events that they participated in. Team Michigan won 4-1 in tennis (see related story), blanked Indiana West 7-0 in girls’ soccer and was 3-1 in volleyball over Indiana West.
Volleyball
Team Michigan defeated Indiana West 25-19, 15-25, 25-19 and 25-21 to advance to Thursday’s championship match against Indiana East at 7 p.m.
Niles’ Rachel Zeider had three kills and three digs for Michigan, while Brandywine’s Kelsey Prestly, who also played tennis on Monday, had three aces and three digs.

Girls’ soccer
Cassopolis’ Bjargey Olafsson had a pair of goals to help lead Team Michigan to a 7-0 victory over Indiana West and a spot in Thursday’s championship match against Indiana Metro at 6 p.m.
St. Joseph’s Ellery Karsten also had two goals and an assist as Team Michigan had little trouble scoring against Indiana Metro, leading 4-0 by halftime.
Michigan held a 25-9 advantage in shots on goal in the match.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — For the second straight day, Team Michigan won a tennis match at Sports Fest without having to take the court.
On Monday afternoon at Bethel College, Indiana West forfeited three flights in Michigan’s 4-1 victory.
On Tuesday, it was even worse because Indiana West could only muster one flight against Michigan in a 4-1 loss.
In the only match played, Trenton Stout of Indiana West defeated Bridgman’s David Hauck 6-2 and 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Michigan now advances to Thursday’s championship match against Indiana Metro, which won thanks to a pair of forfeits.
The match will begin at 5 p.m.

Team Michigan used three forfeits to advance to Thursday’s championship match against Indiana Metro.
On the court, Michigan split a pair of matches — one in singles and one in doubles.
Buchanan’s Nash Hughes defeated Erin Kinney 6-3 and 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while in doubles action it was Indiana’s Shannon Elliott-Lindsay Renz over Brandywine’s Lauren Leonard and Kelsey Prestly 6-3 and 6-4.
