Clark wins Division 2 title

STURGIS — Host Sturgis and Vicksburg won regional track championships Friday night in Division 2.

The Trojans easily defeated St. Joseph for the girls’ title, 97-69.5. Dowagiac finished sixth (50.5), Niles seventh (45) and Edwardsburg 14th (19).

The Bulldogs edged Wolverine Conference foe Gull Lake 87-81 to claim the boys’ crown. Edwardsburg was seventh (48), Niles eighth (42.5) and Dowagiac 14th (12).

The Eddies’ Emily Kozinski and Casey Garcia qualified for the state finals in the discus and the pole vault respectively.

Kozinski was a regional champion with a toss of 98-3. Garcia was fifth after clearing a height of 9-4.

The Chieftains’ Kaisha Martin was a three-time regional champion as she won the 100- and 200-meters, along with the long jump. Martin is the defending Division 3 state champion in the 100-meters and long jump. She was also a member of the 400-meter relay team, which also qualified for the state meet by finishing second.

The top two finishes in each event, plus anyone who qualifies by time, height of distance, advance to the finals.

Martin had a lead of 17-feet in the long jump and times of 12.46 and 26.29 in the 100 and 200 respectively. The 400-meter relay team posted a time of 51.6. Also on that team were Jacoya Brookins, Creona Rodgers and Andrea Wade.

Rodgers qualifed in the high jump with her height of of 4-11.

Niles’ Miranda Baker was a regional champion as she cleared 5-1 to capture the high jump.

Other qualifiers for the Vikings included Taylor Brandstatter, who was third in the 400-meters (1:00.63) and was a member of the runner-up 1,600-meter relay team that ran 4:15.23. Paige Chaffin, Karon Nichols and Lashonda Green were the other three members of that squad.

Josh Clark won the 1,600-meters with a time of 4:27.12, was second in the 800-meters with a time of 1:57.60.

The Eddies also qualified its 3,200-meter relay team, which ran a time of 8:17.00. Greg Hall qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.10 and Nick Thomas qualified in the pole vault with a height of 13-2.01.

The Division 2 state meet will be held at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids on Saturday, June 4.
