Jo-Ann Boepple: Looking forward to what’s next

Last week a summary of the 2010 events at the museum was listed here but the questions remains: What’s next?
At the end of November or the beginning of December the museum group gathered together and determined what the exhibits will be for the next year. It is done early so that there is time when the museum is closed to make plans for the new displays.
This year something different will be tried for the first time. A single topic will drive the events of the year.
It was decided that the topic for 2011 will be medicine. Edwardsburg has from it’s early years been an important area for practicing medicine.
This was proved by the number of doctors who have had a practice here. That may seem strange when there are only a few here now and for many years there was only one doctor in town. But the field of medicine is evident in the other areas.
The museum will honor those from the community who are or have been involved in the field of medicine whether it be as a doctor, nurse, technician or assistant.
Over the next few months an attempt to compile a list of these people in the profession will be a goal.
In the meantime, these topics have been selected for the periodic displays. To open the museum in May will be a small patriotic display highlighting the past parades and festivals. It will coincide with the Memorial Day celebration.
This will include uniforms, medals, pictures of our service men over the years, a flag display as well as newspaper headlines.
This display will be in place until June when the topic will be medical personnel. Along with those who work in the field, demonstrations of CPR, and the emergency medical technicians will be hosted in the back lawn.
After that display will be medicines as the next topic, this will include prescription as well as over the counter preparations.
Miss Cass County/St. Joseph County, Lindsey Stoeckinger, a pharmacy student at Purdue University will be featured and will do a presentation. Lindsey has been a volunteer at the museum during her summers.
October will be the display of alternative medicines; the myths and the miracles. Other alternatives such as crystals and herbs will be explored. This display will also include a presentation in the back lawn.
In November, the Christmas displays will have John and Sally Dalrymple again with their Dept. 56 lighted Christmas buildings with the centerpiece of a small hospital surrounded by a town.
This topic will present a challenge for the museum group but should be a very different than anything the museum as attempted in the past. It will require help from the community.
If you have suggestions, contributions or would like to help, please let the museum group know.
