DES MOINES, Iowa – Former Edwardsburg standout Becky Breisch won another national championship this past weekend.

Breisch, who started at the University of Nebraska, captured the 2010 USA Track and Field Championships’ discus with a toss of 207-feet-10.

The former Drake Relays champion, captured the national title at Drake Stadium.

Her throw, while good enough to win the national championship, isn’t even her best of the year.

Back in April she had a toss of 211-3, which was eighth best in the world this year.
Breisch competed for the Cornhuskers from 2002 until 2006. She currently trains in Chula Vista, Calif.

“I wasn’t consistent,” she said following her victory. “I had a hard start getting out. Jarred Rome was helping me. He was coaching me. Unfortunately, my coach was in the stadium with the pole vault and shot put. He [Rome] definitely got me going and through it. My third and fourth throws were my good ones – including the 63-meter throw. So that was great.”

She is a 2001 graduate of Edwardsburg High School, where she won both the discus and the shot put state championships in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

She chose to continue her athletic career at Nebraska, where she became an eight time All-American and a two-time NCAA champion.

She captured the outdoor shot put title in 2003 and the discus championship in 2004.
She won the USA discus title in 2005 and was third in 2006. She finished as the national runner-up in 2007.

Breisch said that she knew it was time to step it up after her disappointing second toss.
“The 63-meter throw, once you kind of know you’re not going to make finals with your second throw, it’s a head game,” she recalled. “And we’ve got a lot of help at the Center that helps you, so you just have to believe in your form and your coach. I was 100 percent there, so I just went back to what I’ve been doing all season.”

Coming back to a familiar surrounding also helped Breisch get into the right frame of mind for the competition.

“I’m from the Midwest. I love the Midwest. I live in California now and that’s where I train, but I’m going to come back to the Midwest. Drake, I consider it my home meet. My family can always get to it. I know the food here. Just the town overall [is familiar]…It’s the Midwest, it’s friendly, it’s great.”

She is currently preparing for the summer season in Europe before getting married in January.

Breisch also has her eyes on the 2012 Olympics.
