Lamoine Gardner, 97, of Edwardsburg passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 at 4 a.m. at LG’s Whispering Pines Adult Care in Edwardsburg.
Lamoine was born Nov. 14, 1912 in Union, Mich. to the late John D. and Hazel (Stark) Mechling. On June 13, 1936 in Elkhart she married Ottis Gardner, who died March 25, 1977. Ottis retired as postmaster of the Edwardsburg Post Office.
Lamoine lived in U.S. Highway 12 most of her life. She graduated from Elkhart High School; received her teaching degree from County Normal; her bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University; and her master’s degree from the University of Michigan. She was a schoolteacher for the Edwardsburg school system for 32 years.
Lamoine was a member of the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Daughters of the Revolution, Monday Evening Club and Eastern Star. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states, the North Pole and made several trips to Europe. Most of all she enjoyed crocheting.
Lamoine is survived by a son, Gary L. Gardner, and many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Roger and Duane Mechling, preceded her in death.
Services will be held at noon, Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, where friends may call one hour before services. Pastor Scott Scheel will be officiating. Burial will follow at Kessington Cemetery.
