NILES - Many hands will make light work out of what now appears now to be the gargantuan task of decorating lamp posts, stringing garland around fences and putting white lights on the newly planted trees in downtown Niles.
Gloria Cooper, chair of the Niles DDA Main-Street Promotions Committee, the group pulling together "Holiday Homecoming" is issuing an invitation to residents of the community to help the committee decorate the town for "Holiday Homecoming," a gala event on Saturday, Dec. 4 celebrating the long-awaited end of the two-year project that has brought downtown Niles back to the way it once looked at the turn of the century.
Toni Smith, a local artist and member of the Promotions Committee, is coordinating the task of decorating the downtown. Smith has previous experience in decorating and lighting trees having done so in the past at the Edward Lowe Foundation grounds in Cassopolis.
She will conduct a workshop on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 1:30 p.m. Following the brief workshop, teams of two will proceed to put lights on approximately 22 trees.
Help is also needed to decorate lampposts with two green wreaths and string garland on fences. Each team should bring a six-foot stepladder.
Volunteers should plan to meet at the Niles DDA-Main Street office, 210 East Main on Sunday at 1:30 pm. Call the office at 687-4332 for further information or answers to questions.
