Niles girls' basketball team played another close game Thursday at Marshall, but the Vikings scored when they needed to, knocking off the previously undefeated Redskins.
With five minutes remaining, the game was tied at 43. Niles got clutch free throws from Melissa Olsen and Sarah Dreher and a key basket by Ashley Pingel to pull out the 52-47 victory.
After scoring at will Tuesday against Sturgis, Niles found it tougher to get points against Marshall's stingy defense. The teams were tied at seven after the first period, and the Vikings carried a 23-19 lead into halftime.
Arnold said Niles committted too many turnovers Thursday, nearly giving the game away.
Sarah Dreher led Niles, hitting five field goals and 5-of-6 free throws for 15 points. Amber Peters was the only other Viking in double-figures with 10.
Melissa Olsen scored nine points for Niles.
Brandie Radde again played sparingly following her return from an ankle injury, as Arnold said he's trying to bring her back slowly from her three-week absence. Radde scored seven points, including a 3-pointer.
Marshall was led by Anna Braner, who scored 16 points, and Paige Dickerson, who scored 13.
The Vikings next game is Tuesday at Dowagiac. Niles beat the Chieftains 50-18 in their first meeting Sept. 30.
