Buchanan's girls' tennis team is off to a quick start this season, and No. 2 singles player Jaclyn Mummaw knows why.
Mummaw is one of the Bucks eight seniors, including all four singles players. The seniors have driven Buchanan's team, and Mummaw has led the seniors thus far.
Last week, Mummaw took first place at the Muskegon Catholic and South Haven tournaments and won her match at a dual meet against Three Rivers. Her 5-0 performance earned her Niles Daily Star Athlete of the Week honors for Aug. 15-21.
Mummaw's coach Cuppy Mace said the senior is one of the biggest leaders on the team, and has been for a few years.
This is Mummaw's second year as a Bucks' captain. She is 7-2 this season and went 16-2 as a junior.
Her two losses came at Grand Haven, a tournament featuring two Division I schools. Mace called the Grand Haven tournament some of the toughest competition she has seen.
Mummaw has played tennis since sixth grade, and has played varsity all four of her years at Buchanan. Last season, she was conference champion, something Mace said she is fully capable of doing again.
Both Mace and Mummaw said her selection as Athlete of the Week is a reflection of how well Buchanan has been playing this season.
Mummaw said the Bucks now have their eyes set on winning the regional championship as a team this season.
As for Mace, she couldn't hold back when talking about one of her best players.
