BENTON HARBOR — The Big 16 Conference West Division made up a match Monday afternoon at Berrien Hills.

Niles and Mattawan ended up in a tie for first place as both schools shot 168. Instead of going to the fifth-man tiebreaker, it was decided that the two teams would split both the first and second place points.

As a result, Mattawan holds a two-point lead over the Vikings in the division standings.

The Wildcats currently have 19 points and Niles 17. Lakeshore is third with 12 and St. Joseph fourth with eight. Benton Harbor is fifth with four points.

“We made a call and they said to split the points,” Niles coach Greg Gunder said. “That was big because we didn’t want to be down four points.”

Niles played without its No. 2 man on Monday as John Schrader was unable to play due to illness. The Vikings pulled up Aaron Carroll from the JV squad to fill out the roster.

Chris Noble shot a 3-under par 33 to earn medalist honors and lead Niles. Dominic Wyland finished with a 41 and Brett Phillips shot 45.

Both Sam Clark and Jared Langmeyer finished at 49. Carroll shot 56.

Niles will travel to Kalamazoo today to play the Millham Park Golf Course at the Loy Norrix Invitational.
