Runner-up: Niles second at opening jamboree

PAW PAW — Host Mattawan captured the first Big 16 Conference West Division Jamboree at Heritage Glen on Wednesday after shooting a 158.

Niles finished second with a 167, while Lakeshore was third with a 168 and St. Joseph fourth with a 169.

Niles was led by Chris Noble and John Schrader, both of whom shot 40.

The Vikings also got a 43 from Brett Phillips, a 44 from Jared Langmeyer and a 45 from Sam Clark. Dominic Wyland finished with a 52.

VICKSBURG — Visiting Dowagiac served notice to the rest of the Wolverine Conference on Wednesday that the Chieftain golf team will be a player in the league race this season.

The Chieftains placed all five players in the top 10 at Angel’s Crossing in the season-opening jamboree and cruised to an eight-shot victory.

Dowagiac’s Chris Craft, Max Howe and Kyle Ward all shot 39, while Jordan Juday and Cody Fairleigh shot 40 and 42 respectively to give the Chieftains a 157.

Defending Wolverine Conference champion Vicksburg finished second with a 165, while Paw Paw took third with a 176.

Rounding out the order of finish were Otsego with a 180, Gull Lake with a 181, South Haven with a 187, Plainwell with a 188, Comstock with a 192 and Allegan with a 269.

“It was a great night for a Chieftain victory,” Dowagiac coach Van Johnson said. It’s been a long time since we packed our scores together so tightly and so low.”

Dowagiac will get right back to work today as it heads to Paw Paw for the next league jamboree. The conference will then wrap up a busy week at South Haven on Friday.
