Before Buchanan's golf season began, boys' head coach Jim Brohman said he expected big things from senior Nathan Layher.
At Tuesday's Lakeland Conference Preseason Jamboree, Layher delivered, shooting a 74 and winning medalist honors.
Layher helped lead the Bucks to fourth place out of seven schools at the jamboree, hosted by Bridgman at Pebblewood Golf Course.
Though his team finished in the middle of the pack Tuesday, Brohman said he was encouraged that Buchanan was just three strokes out of third place and nine strokes out of second.
Coloma won the tournament, shooting 11 strokes better than second place Edwardsburg. The Comets had three golfers shoot in the 70s.
Buchanan plays host to St. Joseph today at 3:30 p.m. at Brookwood Golf Course. Last year Brohman said his team hung with St. Joe's most the way, losing by 10 strokes.
