Alexander Nicholas Lindzy, 20, of Buffalo Ill., was arraigned today at the Berrien County South County Courthouse in Niles on multiple charges after an early morning shooting Monday in the 1300 block of South Third Street.

Niles City Police Capt. Jim Millin said the department’s investigation “has led us to believe he is the only suspect involved.”

Lindzy faces five felony charges and one misdemeanor charge including:

• Carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony
• Discharging (weapon) under the influence, a five-year felony
• Receiving and concealing a weapon that has be stolen, a 10 year felony
• Felony firearm, a two-year felony
• Assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony
• Careless discharge of a firearm, a two-year misdemeanor

Lindzy is being held on a $100,000 cash bond at the Berrien County Jail in St. Joseph.

He was arrested Monday morning after police were dispatched to Lakeland Hospital after the incident occurred at a residence on South Third Street where Lindzy and the victim, Carelton Lofland, 20, of Los Osos, Calif. were visiting friends.

While at the house, the investigation concluded Lindzy “displayed the weapon and discharged it.”

Lindzy then transported Lofland to Lakeland Hospital and then to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.

According to Millin, Lindzy and Lofland were in town visiting Lindzy’s family. Though he says there was no apparent argument between the two, he said “we’re not going so far to say that aiming it at anyone was accidental.”

With the investigation “pretty much complete,” and Lindzy awaiting a preliminary hearing, Millin said the last he’d heard of Lofland, he was recovering and “resting comfortably.”
