Bears hand Chiefs doubleheader setback Monday

ST. JOSEPH – The Dowagiac varsity baseball team dropped a non-league doubleheader against host St. Joseph on Monday.
The Bears won the opening game 8-3 and then completed the sweep with a 14-3, five inning victory in the nightcap.
Zac Hyatt (2-2) took the loss in the opening game for the Chieftains. Andrew Kurdlemeyer and Drew Cooper also took the hill for Dowagiac.
Tim DeRyder and Hyatt both had two hits for the Chieftains. Hyatt also drove in a run.
Tanner Melvin and Kurdlemeyer were both credited with RBIs.
In the second game, Justin Gordy, DeRyder and Cooper all pitched for the Chieftains.
Gordy took the loss and is now 0-2 on the year.
Alex Miller led the Dowagiac office with three singles. Hyatt singled and drove in a run, while Melvin drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Chieftains (11-8) are back on the road today as they head to Comstock for a Wolverine Conference doubleheader.
The Dowagiac junior varsity baseball team split with visiting St. Joseph on Monday.
The Chieftains won the first game 3-2, but dropped the nightcap 4-1.
Matt Ernzen was the winning pitcher in the opening game as he allowed two hits with a strikeout in five innings of work.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Jacom Williams singled home the winning run. Mike Bennett scored the winning run for the Chieftains.
Dowagiac tied the game in the third inning when Jeremy Judy doubled, Chris Gantt singled to drive him in. Gantt then scored on a double by Cody Carnell.
Gantt took the loss in the nightcap despite not allowing an earned run or walking a batter.
He did give up five hits, while striking out three.
Williams drove in Dowagiac's only run with a double.
Dowagiac hosts Comstock today at 4 p.m.
