Former Dowagiac resident Roger L. Modl, 78, of Paris, Texas, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham, Texas.
Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled memorial services for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at First Christian Church, Paris, Texas, with Dr. Bob Chandler officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Mr. Modl, the son of Frank X. and Velma Percy Modl, was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Eau Claire, Wis.
On June 27, 1954, he married Ruth Lang, building 54 years of family and memories.
During the Korean Conflict he served in the U. S. Navy.
He retired from Merico Box as a truck driver following a career that spanned 35 years.
He then worked part time at Walmart as a greeter.
He was a member of First Christian Church of Paris, the Elks Lodge, Paris, and while living in Michigan he was an active member of the Lions Club.
His hobbies included fishing, golfing and wood working.
Survivors include: his wife, Ruth; three sons, Keith Modl and wife Anita of Caddo Mills, Texas; Bruce Modl and wife Lorri of Reno, Texas; and Craig Modl and wife Jody of Elkhart, Ind.; a daughter, Sharon Martin and husband Sam of Reno, Texas; seven grandchildren, Amber, Levi, Lisa, Scott, Jason, Samantha and Jennifer; two great-grandchildren, Ariel and Ethen; and one sister, Joan Tibbitts and husband Harry of Allegan, along with a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Modl; and a great granddaughter, Amelia Modl.
The family requests that memorials be made to First Christian Church of Dowagiac or to the Dowagiac Fire Department.
