City Hall holiday schedule: I want to remind everyone of the City Hall schedule for the upcoming holidays.
For the Christmas holiday, City Hall will close on Wednesday, Dec. 24, at noon and reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 26.
Also, offices will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 31, at noon until Friday, Jan. 2, in recognition of the New Year's holiday.
Rescue training: The Fire Department will be conducting an ice rescue training this Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Training will begin at the Fire Department from 10 a.m. to approximately 11 a.m. and the rest of the time they will be at Heddon Park.
Brownfield plan: The Brownfield Authority has met and is recommending that City Council approve a second brownfield plan for the City of Dowagiac.
This plan is an important part of an overall economic development strategy for the community.
It allows for a streamlined approval process and opens the door for investors in environmentally sensitive properties to receive Michigan business tax credits.
Prior to acting on this recommendation, City Council would need to call for public hearings as well as notify all taxing jurisdictions of this proposed plan.
Council will have this item for consideration on the Jan. 12, 2009, meeting agenda and a public hearing could take place as early as February 2009.
Temporary occupancy: 214 Miller Street. Excellent progress is taking place on New Harvest Missionary Baptist Church at 214 Miller St. Temporary occupancy has been extended to June 2009 to allow for paving the parking lot when weather permits.
2007-08 audit: The audit is an important tool for elected officials and the public to be assured that funds are being used for authorized purposes and accounted for in the proper manner.
The auditors have completed their work and submitted their final report for fiscal year 2007-08.
Their report indicates we have a clean audit.
Our accounting staff is to be recognized for their efforts in assisting in the preparation these documents.
