While the 2004 outdoor seasons have been under way for several weeks now, Western Michigan's track and field teams competed close to home for the first time last Saturday, taking part in the non-scored Spring Opener at Notre Dame.
Due to technical difficulties at the finish line, only limited official meet results were available. Based on unofficial results, however, both Bronco squads turned in solid performances.
Kelly Lycan's women's team recorded four first-place finishes. Chelsea Humphrey took first in the 100m hurdles (13.88) while Lori Vander Meulen captured top honors in the 800m run (2:19.12) for the second straight week. Janee' Beville took home the long jump title (17'-4.25"). WMU's 4×400 relay (4:07.49) of Katie Pickette, Niles High School graduate Janaule Bennett, Victoria Bassett and Wanda Tippit also placed first.
Just as impressive was senior Kristi Ford's effort in the hammer throw. With a toss of 175'-9", Ford qualified for the NCAA Regionals, to be held May 28-29 in Baton Rouge, La. Ford's leap of 5'-6" in the high jump was good enough for second place.
WMU is currently taking part in the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
