CASSOPOLIS — A Dowagiac man was sentenced in Cass County Circuit Court Friday to prison for sexually molesting a minor for about six years.
Richard Jones, 25, of 431 E. Division St., pleaded guilty Jan. 10 to criminal sexual conduct in the second degree as part of a plea agreement.
The victim, who was present in court, told the judge she has nightmares and flashbacks as a result of the abuse.
“I do forgive him,” she said.
Prosecutor Victor Fitz said Jones “obviously has some issues in his life. We’re hoping the defendant will take stock of what he’s done.”
Jones’ attorney, Dale Blunier of Edwardsburg, said it was “very gracious of the victim” to forgive the defendant.
“I’ve had trouble trying to forgive myself,” said Jones, who apologized and indicated he also wants to receive counseling.
Judge Michael Dodge told Jones that because the victim is so forgiving in this case, it is of “substantial benefit to you.”
“Clearly, you deserve the maximum penalty,” Dodge said, adding that he was taking into consideration the “long-term psychological damage to the victim.”
Jones was sentenced to two to 15 years in prison.
He has no previous criminal record.
