DECATUR – Van Buren District Library is bidding a fond farewell to one of its veteran employees.
Assistant Director Judy Fusko is the honored guest at an open house on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Webster Memorial Library in Decatur.
"Expect the sterling silver," Fusko says. "However, I may have to spend my last week here polishing it."
And the 28-year library veteran would.
Since 1980, Fusko has worked her way up the ranks from opening boxes of new books and mastering the library's first computer to helping oversee building projects in six of the library's seven facilities.
Early in her tenure, Fusko's eye for detail meant spending Friday nights at the library entering the first records into the fledgling computer system.
It meant being an integral team member in forming the district library and pushing for a successful millage vote in 1990 and 1991.
It meant assisting with three major projects in 1995: automating the library, installing the first public Internet computers and expanding Webster Memorial.
In 2003, it meant a promotion to assistant director.
Fusko credits Library Director David Tate for identifying his employees' strengths and putting them in positions where they will succeed.
"I love the detail. I'm a get-things-done type of person. I've been extremely happy to have a job that uses my intellect and abilities and is close to home. I've also enjoyed interacting with the community. I feel like I'm giving back."
Fusko will continue to serve the community beginning this fall.
She is running unopposed Nov. 4 for Wayne Township treasurer.
Tate says Fusko's contributions will not be forgotten.
"She has played a key role in the library's success. We are going to miss her dedication and work ethic."
Family, friends and the general public are invited to the open house in the community room of Webster Memorial Library in Decatur on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Van Buren District Library is headquartered in Decatur, with branches in Bangor, Bloomingdale, Covert, Gobles, Lawrence and Mattawan.
