Western opens at MSU on ESPN2 Sept. 4

EAST LANSINGĀ – Michigan State’s Sept. 4 season and home opener against Western Michigan will be televised by ESPN2, with kickoff set for 12 p.m.
In its 113-year football history, Michigan State is 74-36-3 (.668) in season openers, including an 8-2 record (.800) in its last 10 games. In addition, the Spartans are 92-21 (.814) in home openers, including an 11-game winning streak that began in 1999.
Michigan State has won 13 of its last 14 home openers, with the only setback coming to Colorado State, 23-16, in the 1998 Black Coaches Association Classic.
The Sept. 4 game marks the 12th meeting between Michigan State and Western Michigan, with all games played in East Lansing. MSU leads the all-time series 9-2, including a 6-0 mark in games played in Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans have won the last seven meetings, including a 49-14 victory last November. In addition, Michigan State has won 23 out of the last 26 games against Mid-American Conference opponents.
ABC previously announced that it will televise MSU’s Sept. 18 home game against Notre Dame in prime time, with kickoff set for 8 p.m.
The Big Ten Conference also previously released 12 p.m. start times for MSU’s Oct. 16 Homecoming game against Illinois and its Oct. 23 game at Northwestern.
The Spartans enter the 2010 season with a streak of 89 consecutive live TV appearances (games televised regionally or nationally since November 2002).
