First Presbyterian to host Maundy Thursday service supper

Each year, Christians around the globe celebrate the Lord’s Last Supper the Thursday before Easter. That day is known as Maundy Thursday, but why?
The Rev. Dr. Patricia Ramsden explains “Maundy” comes from the Latin word for command and reflects Christ’s command that his followers take Holy Communion as a remembrance of His death and resurrection.
Many of these services are “tennebrae” services or services of darkness where candles are extinguished during the telling of Christ’s final hours on Earth.
First Presbyterian Church at 115 Front St., Buchanan will celebrate a Tennebrae service April 1 at 6 p.m.
The service will begin with a simple soup supper and communion will be taken around the supper table much as it was on the night before Christ’s death. Everyone is invited to attend.
The Presbyterian Church believes that communion is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord. Non-believers will be given the option of participating in the service without taking communion itself.
