Don Sherwood, 66, of Anderson Road, Niles died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 20, 1943 in Niles to Lester E. and Ruth L. (Arter) Sherwood, and has lived in Niles all his life. He was employed at Clark Equipment for 22 years when it was in Buchanan, and then owned and operated Sherwood’s Country Corner feed and tack shop. He also farmed, raising hay and Haflinger horses.

Don was a life member of the Cass County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Posse. He collected Allis-Chalmers tractors and enamelware, and was known as the “Garage Sale King.” He also enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre.

On June 13, 1964 in Niles he married the former Sandra J. Olinger, who survives. He is also survived by their sons, Jon (Lisa) Sherwood of Niles, Scott (Wendy) Sherwood of Berrien Springs and Tom (Sabrina) Sherwood of Niles; their grandchildren, Autumn, Ali and Leighton; and Don’s sister and brothers, Helen (Richard) Blighton of Eau Claire, Mich., Eugene (Marge) Sherwood of Niles and Dale (Karen) Sherwood of Niles; sisters-in-law, Norma (Walter) Sherwood and Helen (Varnold) Sherwood, both of Niles; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Varnold “Barney” Sherwood, who died Dec. 21, 1998, and Walter “Howard” Sherwood, who died Aug. 28, 2003.

Services for Don Sherwood will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles with the Rev. Patricia Haas of Pokagon United Methodist Church officiating.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
