Niles wrestling defends title at Grant Invitational

The Niles varsity wrestling team won its second tournament of the season and improved to 10-1 on the year Saturday at the Grant Invitational.
The Vikings registered victories over Big Rapids, Muskegon Orchard View, Newaygo, South Haven and Grant to earn the top spot for the second year in a row.
Niles beat Big Rapids 60-12 to start the day. The Vikings then beat Orchard View 58-18 in the second round before routing Newaygo 76-3 in the third round. Niles edged South Haven 45-30 in the fourth round before beating Grant 50-15 in the finals.
With his team off to a strong start, Galvin is pleased with the effort but not ready to assume too much yet. The Vikings host perennial powerhouse Lakeshore Thursday night to open the Big-16 West Division schedule.
Matt Poehlman (103), Charles Nelson (135), Josh Henry (171) and James Edwards (215) each went undefeated Saturday for Niles.
The Vikings will take part in the Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday.
Brandywine finishes third at Sturgis
Invitational, takes two indidual titles
The Brandywine varsity wrestling team brought home two individual championships and a third-place team finish from the Sturgis Invitational Saturday.
The Bobcats scored 126 points to finish third. Bronson won the event with 158 points and Kalamazoo Central finished second with 131. Dowagiac took fifth place with 110.5 points and Buchanan finished sixth with 98.5.
Adam Ringler and Evan Smith won individual championships at 145 pounds and 152 pounds, respectively. J.D. Miller (119), Robert Thompson (135) and Josh Johns (275) each finished third in their weight divisions.
Mike Morrison (112), Kyle Perry (130) and Matt Koller (140) each took fourth place.
Brandywine hosts Coloma Wednesday in a Lakeland Conference match at 6 p.m.
