PAW PAW – The Dowagiac junior varsity baseball team split a pair of games with host Paw Paw on Tuesday.
The split left Dowagiac with a 15-9 record heading into today's make-up doubleheader with Otsego.
The Chieftains lost the first game 10-9, but rallied to win the nightcap 16-3.
Tyler First took the loss in the opening game in relief of starter Shaun Bruens.
Bruens was 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI, while Adam Roach singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice.
First was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Cody Cox tripled and drove in three runs. Brandon Douglas also drove in a run. Reggie Fritz added a double.
In the nightcap, Tanner Melvin improved to 3-1 with a five-hitter. Melvin struck out four and walked two.
Offensively for the Chieftains, Cox was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Andrew Hurrle went 2-for-2 with five RBIs.
Roach was 2-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored, while Bruens singled and drove in two runs. Melvin doubled and scored twice for the Chieftains, who also got a single and two RBIs from Brent O'Brien.
"We didn't deserve to win game one after jumping up 6-0 in the first inning," Dowagiac coach Bryan Henry said. "We played very poor defensively, while Bruens and First did their job on the mound. Melvin did a nice job of throwing strikes in game two and we also continued to hit the ball extremely well."
