NILES -- Brandywine High School junior Emily Whitney and Niles High School senior Lonnie Jones are the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for Nov. 3-8
Whitney is a member of the Brandywine varsity basketball team which split a pair of games last week. In a 53-46 win over Lawrence on Tuesday, Whitney paced the Bobcats with 21 points. In a 78-54 loss to Bridgman Thursday, she again led Brandywine with 10 points.
Jones is a member of the Niles varsity football team which lost in the Division 3, Region 2, District 1 championship game last week. In the 37-21 loss to Lakeshore, Jones carried the ball 28 times for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the season with 2,584 yards on 295 carries and 29 touchdowns. He scored 178 points for the Vikings and stands eighth on the Michigan High School Athletic Association all-time single season rushing record list. The Vikings finished with a record of 7-4.
