CASSOPOLIS – A driver fainted on U.S. 12 in Milton Township Thursday afternoon, colliding with a semi.
A third driver from Niles struck a utility pole attempting to avoid the crash.
Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports his deputies handled the personal-injury accident at 12:52 p.m. Dec. 28 on U.S. 12 near Leet Road.
A vehicle driven by Thomas Seggerman, 55, of Granger, Ind., was traveling east when he fainted, crossed the centerline and struck a westbound semi driven by Randy Schultz, 41, of Benton Harbor. Seggerman was transported to South Bend, Ind., Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Schultz was treated at the scene and released.
The third driver, Steven Mitchell, 52, of Niles, was following Seggerman and ran off the road to the right and into the pole. Mitchell was not injured.
Edwardsburg fire and ambulance personnel, SMCAS (Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service of Niles), Edwardsburg police and the Michigan State Police post from Niles assisted deputies at the scene.
Deputies said seatbelts were worn, and that alcohol was not a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.
