Chief Tom Atkinson of the Dowagiac Police Department reports that on Friday, Nov. 10, around 8:48 p.m. his officers investigated a motor vehicle accident with one person injured. The accident took place on M-51 South, just southwest of the intersection with M-62 West.
An SUV driven by Garland Smith, 74, of Dowagiac, was traveling southwest on M-51 when it left the roadway and struck a utility pole.
Smith sustained apparent minor injuries. Dowagiac Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Service was called to the scene and transported Smith to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital. Smith was treated for his injuries and released. The Cass County Sheriff's Office also assisted officers at the accident scene. The accident remains under investigation. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, police said.
