Dr. Canady addresses educators at ISD

CASSOPOLIS – Part one of a five- part series on high school redesign was presented on Nov. 9 at Lewis Cass Intermediate School District.
Dr. Robert L. Canady, nationally known author and expert on high school reform, presented the "Philosophy and Foundations of the 21st Century High School" to 33 educators representing seven local school districts and two Intermediate School Districts.
Teams of educators from Lewis Cass ISD, Berrien County ISD, Cassopolis, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg, Marcellus, Berrien Springs, Watervliet and Harbor Beach public schools heard Dr. Canady.
Dr. Canady presented information about school factors that relate to increasing the success of high school students.
He noted that school scheduling is a critical factor in how time is used to increase student achievement.
Dr. Canady presented several options for the delivery of instruction based on student needs.
He gave specific examples to help educators better prepare students to succeed in the new Michigan Merit Curriculum.
Dr. Canady is professor in the Department of Leadership, Foundations and Policy, Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia.
The five-part high school redesign series is being sponsored by the Lewis Cass Intermediate School District.
