Chiefs blanked by Bears

ST. JOSEPH – The Dowagiac varsity soccer team played well Saturday night in a 3-0 loss to perennial powerhouse St. Joseph on the Bears' Senior Night.
The Chieftains held the Bears scoreless through the first 40 minutes of play, but were unable to contain St. Joseph for a five-minute stretch in the second half.
Kyle Haumersen scored the winning goal in the 55th minute.
St. Joseph then scored a pair of insurance goals in the 60th minute, one from Bryan Russell and the other from Corey Scott.
Dowagiac's junior varsity squad defeated previously unbeaten St. Joseph in the first match of the doubleheader, 1-0.
Americo Martine scored the Chieftains' lone goal in the first minute of the match.
St. Joseph outshot Dowagiac 16-3. Jacob Deuel recorded the shut out with some outstanding work by the Chieftains' defense.
"Both the junior varsity and varsity played well today," Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. "Now we have to prepare for back-to-back matches on Monday and Tuesday."
"They finally found the heart I have looked for in their last two matches," junior varsity coach Craig Black added.
The Chieftains travel to Otsego tonight for a pair of matches, while on Tuesday Dowagiac will host Paw Paw in a varsity-only match.
The junior varsity team will kick things off tonight at 5, with the varsity match slated for approximately 6:45 p.m.
