CASSOPOLIS – Legislatures around the country are creating new laws in reaction to local concerns about immigration. Yet experts say many of the 80 newly enacted laws will turn out to be unconstitutional. Is this a new form of racism?
Are you concerned or confused about immigration policy?
The Minority Coalition of Cass County invites you to a friendly discussion of the issues Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Cassopolis VFW Post, 131 S. Broadway, Cassopolis.
Light refreshments will be available.
Five panelists will discuss specific topics before taking questions from the audience. Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz will explain the Bush administration's policy and discuss areas of agreement and areas of conflict. Guillermo Martinez, Past-President of the Southwest Michigan Migrant Resource Council, will talk about huge protests that occurred both locally and nationally in April and May.
Michelle Andrews, President of the Cassopolis Village Council, will discuss the fears and economic realities of local residents.
J. Findley May, South Bend journalist, will talk about the importance of listening to minority voices, and the responsibility of the media. Finally, Lloyd Hamilton, Director of Child and Family Services for the Lewis Cass Intermediate School District, will describe his own naturalization process, and discuss appropriate responses to illegal aliens.
Ruth Andrews, staff to the Human Services Coordinating Council, will moderate the panel.
The mission of the Minority Coalition is to promote racial harmony.
