Rubinos dominate doubles again

A pair of defending champions successfully defended their titles on Saturday at the Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament.
Mike and Chuck Rubino captured the men's doubles title with a two-set victory over Larry Watson and Mike Hoff.
Lisa Rubino and Ann O'Keefe defended their women's doubles championship as they went 2-0 in the round robin tournament.
Men's doubles
Team Rubino defeated Watson and Hoff 6-1 and 6-3 to win the title.
The Rubinos reached the finals with a 6-3, 3-6 and 11-9 victory over Jim Darr and Scott Marshall in the semifinals. The third set was decided in a super tiebreaker.
The Rubinos received a first round bye as the defending champions. It was their third straight championship and the fourth overall title for Chuck Rubino.
Watson and Hoff made it to the finals with a pair of two-set victories.
In the opening round, Watson and Hoff defeated Matt and Chris Marbach, 6-4 and 6-2. In the semifinals, they defeated Dave Negron and Terry Proctor, 6-2 and 6-4.
Marshall and Darr reached the quarterfinals with a first round victory over Mike Urbanski and Jack Miller, 6-4 and 6-1. Negron and Proctor made it to the quarterfinals with a win over Josue Miranda and Evan Bressler, 6-1 and 6-1.
In the consolation round, Marshall and Darr defeated Negron and Proctor in a super set, 8-2, to finish in third place.
Negron and Proctor defeated Urbanski and Miller to advance to the consolation finals, while Marshall and Darr defeated the Marbachs.
Women's doubles
There were just three teams in the women's doubles tournament, so the format switched to round robin.
In the first round, Sue Watson and Tonya Scherer defeated Taylor Townsend and Ashley Smith, 6-1 and 6-1.
Defending champions O'Keefe and Rubino needed three sets to knock off Watson and Scherer in the second round, 6-1, 5-7 and 6-1.
Rubino and O'Keefe clinched the championship with a 6-2 and 6-0 win over Townsend and Smith in the final round.
Mixed doubles
Mike and Lisa Rubino successfully defended their Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament mixed doubles championship with a two-set victory over Sue Watson and Scott Marshall.
Team Rubino won their fourth straight title and the fifth straight for Mike Rubino.
The Rubinos defeated Watson and Marshall in the finals, 6-3 and 6-4.
After an opening round bye, the Rubinos defeated Mike and Shelly Urbanski in the semifinals, 6-2 and 6-0.
Watson and Marshall, who also had a first round bye, reached the finals with a 6-3 and 6-3 win over Mike Hoff and Tonya Scherer in the semifinals.
Team Urbanski advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5 and 6-2 victory over Jesse and Taylor Townsend in the opening round.
Hoff and Scherer reached the semifinals with a victory over Ashley Smith and Aaron Krieger by default. Smith suffered a knee injury, which required her to retire from the match.
In the consolation round, Team Urbanski defeated Hoff and Scherer 8-1 in a super set to finish third.
