Karen Melvin joins Niles schools staff

Niles Community Schools is welcoming 32 new teachers and counselors to the district this year. This continues a series of profiles introducing new teachers to the Niles community.
How many years of teaching experience do you have?
Seven years.
Where do you come from and where have you taught in the past?
I was born and raised in Niles. I taught in Edwardsburg for four years before moving to Lake City where I taught for three years. I have experienced teaching in special education classrooms from grades three through eight.
Where did you get your teachers education?
Grand Valley State University.
What will you teach at Niles Community Schools?
I will be teaching in a classroom serving autistically-impaired students at Southside.
Why did you choose to teach in this school district?
I am a graduate of Niles High School. I have great respect for this district and I look forward to working with the children of this community.
What are you looking forward to as a new teacher in this school district?
I look forward to the challenges and rewards associated with helping children meet their potential.
What did you know about the area before you came here?
I was born and raised here.
What do you know about the school district?
I feel that I received a quality education from Niles Community Schools. I am impressed with the many positive things that I have heard from the staff and the community members.
How did you become interested in teaching?
I have always wanted to be a teacher. I am a goal oriented person who loves children and the challenge of meeting their individual learning needs.
What are some of your hobbies? Swimming, tennis, golf, reading and spending time with family.
