Of the 30.5 percent who voted, young and old are more active

City Clerk Jim Snow's voter turnout report on the Nov. 8 general election breaks down who went to the polls by precinct, gender and age group.
For the City of Dowagiac, 30.5 percent of registered voters participated in the election which rewarded Mayor Don Lyons with a third term, returned Donna O'Konski (First Ward), Bob B. Schuur (Second Ward) and Leon Laylin (Third Ward) to City Council and re-elected City Treasurer Robin Coffey, also to her third four-year term.
The highest percentage of voters, 37.47 percent, cast ballots in Second Ward. Third Ward tallied 26.23 percent, trailed by First Ward at 25.99 percent.
The highest age group percentage of voters were those over age 60, with 48.85-percent voter turnout.
Voters in the 51-59 (33.59 percent) and 18-21 (30.5 percent) age brackets exceeded 30-percent turnout, but those in the groups 22-30 (22.13 percent), 31-40 (13.36 percent) and 41-50 (18.27 percent) all lagged significantly behind the citywide average. Dowagiac's 3,757 registered voters consist of 1,605 males (479 or 29.84 percent voted) and 2,152 females (667 or 30.99 percent voted).
