CONSTANTINE – Imagine riding on a cushion of air, only inches apart from your competition going into a turn at 65 miles per hour, all while being on your knees!
This is what hundreds of racers across the country call Stock Outboard Racing.
For over 50 years, the Michigan Hydroplane Racing Association (MHRA) has brought hydroplane racing to the St. Joseph River in Constantine, being one of the crown jewels of the MHRA circuit hosted annually by American Legion Post 223.
Over the weekend of June 20-21, racers from across the Midwest will bring their equipment to run for the checkered flag with speeds ranging from 35 miles per hour in the Junior class up to 85+ miles per hour in the fastest classes of Stock Outboard racing.
Stock Outboard Racing has always been prided for its competition aspect but certainly the sport does not lack a family feel in the sport with members ranging in age 9 to 80. Local favorites include Joe and Charlie Pater (St. Joseph and Coloma), Adam Low (Galesburg) and Laura Wheeler (Kalamazoo).
In addition to racing, MHRA will present their 2009 "Racer School" on Friday.
It is here that anyone interested in powerboat racing can finally get their own ride in a hydroplane under the supervision of seasoned, professional MHRA drivers.
For more information on participating, see the MHRA Web site.
The Great Lakes Challenge is an APBA (American Powerboat Association) sanctioned event that includes all Stock Outboard and Junior Classes.
Racing will be held between 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., weather permitting.
